What is a phone farm?
A phone farm is a group of smartphones, usually Android, that run apps at the same time under the control of software rather than a person. Each phone holds its own account, SIM or proxy and schedule.
Businesses use them because some work only exists inside a mobile app: an app with no API, an account that has to look like a real user, a message that has to come from a real number. A farm does that work at the scale of a team without the team.
What is phone farming?
Phone farming is the day-to-day running of a phone farm: setting up the devices, warming up accounts, scheduling activity, watching for bans and keeping the automation working when apps update.
The setup is a weekend. The farming is every day after that, which is why most of the cost is in the running, not the hardware. Our setup guide covers the first part, and phone farm software the second.
What are phone farms used for?
The legitimate uses are the ones where a business needs many real app accounts doing ordinary work:
- Account warm-up
- New numbers and profiles brought up gradually, so they behave like people from day one. See the WhatsApp phone farm page.
- Social media management
- Posting, replying and daily activity across many brand or creator accounts on TikTok and Instagram.
- Messaging from a backend
- A CRM or support system that sends through real WhatsApp numbers on real phones.
- Apps with no API
- Payment apps, marketplaces and internal tools where the only interface is the screen.
- Testing
- Running the same flow on many devices and app versions at once.
Phone farm vs click farm: what is the difference?
A click farm sells fake engagement, clicks, views or reviews, usually by people paid per action; a phone farm is the hardware and software that runs app accounts, and what it is used for is up to its owner.
MationX builds automation for businesses running their own accounts. We do not build fake reviews.
How do you build a phone farm?
There are three ways, and many farms mix them:
- Handsets on a shelf
- Ordinary Android phones or tablets on USB hubs or Wi-Fi. Cheapest to start, the most cables.
- Box phones
- A chassis with about twenty phone boards and one connection to a PC. Dense, tidy and built for this. See box phone farm.
- Cloud phones
- Android phones rented in a provider's datacenter. No hardware and no shipping; see cloud phone automation.
What software runs a phone farm?
Something has to open the apps and do the work on every phone: a cloud panel, a box control app, your own scripts, or a team that builds and runs it for you.
The phone farm software page compares the four. MationX is the fourth: we build the flows for your apps, run them on your phones or cloud phones, and fix them when the apps update.
What does a phone farm cost?
The hardware is the smaller part; the running is the larger one: SIMs or proxies, power, and the hours spent keeping automation working after app updates. The phone farm cost calculator works it out for your number of phones.
With MationX the automation is a pilot from $1,000, then from $300 a month to run, monitor and fix it, with the monthly growing as the farm does and the price per phone dropping. Details on pricing.
Are phone farms legal?
Owning and automating phones is legal; what matters is what the accounts do. Each app has its own terms, and fake engagement, fraud and spam are against the law in many countries regardless of the tool.
This is not legal advice. If your use is close to a line, ask a lawyer where you operate.
